Job Description

Our Client is an Engineering & Contracting Company looking for a Field Geologist to support and supervise geotechnical investigation activities on site

The candidate will be responsible for supervising drilling operations, carrying out geological and geotechnical borehole logging, monitoring SPT and other field tests, collecting and managing soil and rock samples, monitoring groundwater conditions, and installing piezometers and other groundwater monitoring instruments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise daily geotechnical drilling and site investigation activities.
  • Coordinate with drilling crews, operators, technicians, and other site personnel.
  • Ensure drilling activities are carried out according to the approved investigation program, drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Monitor drilling depth, progress, casing installation, borehole stability, and groundwater conditions.
  • Supervise and verify SPT testing at the required depths and ensure accurate recording of results.
  • Supervise soil and rock sampling and ensure representative samples are collected from relevant strata.
  • Monitor rock coring activities, including core recovery, RQD measurements, core handling, and core-box management.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate soil and rock borehole logs in accordance with applicable BS/ASTM or project-specific standards.
  • Identify and describe soil and rock formations, including classification, color, consistency/density, moisture condition, weathering, fracturing, and other relevant characteristics.
  • Record SPT results, sample depths, groundwater levels, recovery, RQD, and other field observations.
  • Continuously update borehole logs throughout drilling activities and maintain appropriate photographic records.
  • Identify unexpected or critical ground and groundwater conditions and immediately report them to the Geotechnical Engineer/Manager.
  • Conduct and supervise geotechnical field tests, including SPT, permeability/hydraulic conductivity tests, groundwater measurements, and other tests required by the investigation program.
  • Carry out or supervise Lefranc, Lugeon, packer, or other in-situ permeability tests, where applicable.
  • Install and monitor piezometers and groundwater monitoring instruments according to approved technical requirements.
  • Ensure proper installation of screen/filter sections, filter sand, bentonite seals, backfill/grout, and protective surface casing.
  • Record piezometer installation details, depths, screened intervals, and initial groundwater measurements.
  • Monitor groundwater levels and report abnormal groundwater conditions or artesian pressure.
  • Ensure soil and rock samples are properly collected, labelled, sealed, preserved, photographed, and transported to the laboratory.
  • Maintain accurate sample identification and chain-of-custody records.
  • Prepare daily drilling and geotechnical investigation reports.
  • Maintain accurate records of borehole coordinates, drilling depths, SPT results, sample recovery, groundwater levels, field tests, piezometer installations, manpower, equipment, and site conditions.
  • Coordinate with the Geotechnical Engineer/Manager regarding daily work plans, investigation priorities, manpower, equipment, and materials.
  • Supervise drilling crews and site technicians and monitor the quality and productivity of their work.
  • Ensure the availability and proper use of drilling tools, casing, water, equipment, and other materials required for investigation activities.
  • Ensure all site activities comply with project HSE requirements and approved site procedures.
